This is a wonderful tribute to Michael; it is a fairly large, heavy book with hundreds of photographs. A number of iconic photos will be familiar to MJ fans from other biographies and magazines, but there are others that have never been published until now. It is a pictorial essay of Michael's career, from his early days as a precocious 6-year-old prodigy with the Jackson 5, to the nadir of his career with Thriller/Dangerous, down to his later years and unfortunate early demise. This book was published with Michael’s fans in mind, and no doubt has the stamp of approval by the Jackson Estate. It contains beautiful full-page headshots of MJ at various phases of his life, some in color, some black and white. The book presents Michael in the best possible light and is a welcome respite for his fans from the usual sensationalistic and unflattering depictions. Quotes about MJ from his friends are also included in the text, so you can see how highly regarded he was as a musician and artist by his peers. His legacy is almost unmatched, except perhaps those of Elvis Presley and The Beatles. This book is a positive, joyful celebration of the man and his music. To be sure, it is a highly sanitized version of his life, but it is one that is straightforward and simple, a much more sympathetic portrait of the King of Pop. This book emphasizes his music and video accomplishments, decade by decade. It delves into his various tours, both with his brothers and as a solo act, and gives interesting insights of the creative process that went into making his albums and music videos. Sensationalism is kept to a bare minimum; the tone is almost scholarly, and I could tell the author was trying very hard to give a respectful account of Jackson’s life. That doesn’t mean certain controversial aspects of MJ’s life weren’t addressed. They were, but presented in a more factual, neutral style instead of the usual supermarket tabloid luridness.Photos of Michael with his “special friends†were carefully omitted, though the 1993 Chandler allegations/settlement and the 2005 Arvizo trial were discussed, along with the one-sided "Living With Michael Jackson." His addiction to plastic surgery was briefly mentioned. Again, this book is more of a basic survey and photo essay of Michael's life, not a detailed biography such as J. Randy Taraborrelli's book that's available here on Amazon. What is delightful is the plethora of photos in this book, including candid shots, closeups and formal portraits of MJ. Some were Michael performing in concert or famous stills from his music videos. Fans are also treated to many unpublished shots of a young Michael with his family, and with his celebrity friends, contemporaries and associates. The book's layout and graphics are outstanding and visually interesting. For example, some pages are blank, save for a quote from Michael. This not only makes the quote stand out more, but is a nice visual contrast to the photographs or text. The book is organized into three sections. The first one, “Historyâ€, features photos and commentary decade by decade, starting with the 1960s, ending with the 2000s. Here the author discusses and illustrates Michael’s life, from his salad days, the Jackson 5 years, his amazing solo career and up to the time of his passing. My favorite MJ decade is the 1980s, during his Thriller/Dangerous years. I felt Michael looked his best; he was handsome, smokin' hot, strong and brimming with youthful energy. MJ owned the 80s, both in music, album sales, music awards, fashion and MTV.The second section is titled "Music: Album By Album. This section is of great historical interest to those studying MJ's music and its influence on popular culture. Each of MJ’s albums is reviewed like a “Behind The Music†feature, with photos, back stories and statistics. Several iconic photos are included of MJ during the time each album came out. Some are from his concerts, or with his celebrity friends at award shows, or famous stills from his music videos. Also included are his posthumous albums. Finally, the book ends with a section titled "Fashion", showing MJ's various looks and costumes throughout the years. It is intriguing to see how Michael’s fashions evolved; he was truly a trendsetter. I remember how sharp he looked in the 1970s with his afro, fringed vests, bell bottoms and platform shoes during his Jackson 5 years. He tops that look with his most iconic from his Off The Wall/Thriller years with the black suits, amazing leather jackets, hats, sequin glove and sparkly socks. He goes into a harder, edgier direction with the tough gang member Dangerous/Smooth Criminal looks to his military-inspired uniforms during History. In his last years he sports a more mature look with sophisticated, hand-tailored suits or simple silk shirts with black pants. Whatever he wore, his style was fresh, innovative, unique, and totally his own. Interesting note: as the young lead singer of the Jackson 5, Michael always selected the costumes he and his brothers wore; his strong sense of style was apparent even back when he was only in elementary school. At the end, there’s a very useful appendix that includes a discography of his albums and hit singles as well as his tours and his filmography. This book would be an excellent reference for those who don’t know anything about Michael Jackson, or as a research tool. The author's account of Jackson’s life and musical contributions is informative without being sensationalistic. Much has been written about MJ's troubles already, so it's refreshing to find a positive book that focuses on his contributions as an artist. It is a book that MJ's family and children will most likely read and appreciate. If you are an avid Jackson fan, then you will enjoy this fine tribute to Michael Jackson, The King of Pop.
